Print and Paper Area Technician
Reporting to the Area representative and under general direction of the manager, SMFA Instructional Technology, this position supports students and faculty by organizing and maintaining printmaking, papermaking and screenprinting area, including its classrooms, studios, all hardware and processes, and inventory of materials and supplies.

The Print and Paper Area technician will work closely with the Media Stockroom and other studio managers and technicians in all areas to support the needs of faculty and students. The position requires the collegiality and interpersonal skills needed to work with Area faculty and students as part of a team in an open, atelier-style print and papermaking studio. He/she will assist students in technical problems that occur beyond class content; answer questions about processes and equipment; assist faculty in the preparation of technical tutorials; organize regular training for faculty and TAs on all Area hardware and software; schedule regular equipment training workshops and studio orientations for the purpose of student and faculty access; organize and schedule regular orientation and training for equipment and studio access for students; work with faculty to develop and improve classrooms, policies, storage, studios and technology; help formulate written Area-wide guidelines and instructions for use; supervise, train and schedule Print and Paper Area student workers; design and construct storage, tables and other small projects as needed, and/or oversight of larger projects in cooperation with the A rea representative and faculty; assist with the gathering, storage and installation of student work for competitions and shows; provide support for visiting artists.

Responsible for the smooth and safe operation of all classrooms, darkrooms and studios; maintain the facilities for proper cleanliness and state of order; maintain inventories, order supplies, track expenses, and authorize equipment access; maintain inventories of resale materials through the School Store; maintain computer workstations and printers with current hardware and software and upgrade consulting with other studio managers; schedule studio facilities (assigning lockers and flat files) and equipment use and keeping staff and faculty abreast of changes; keep inventory in workable condition; troubleshoot and upgrade systems as needed, maintain a basic maintenance system and repair schedule, including: perform minor equipment repairs, trouble shoot problems with equipment, monitor status of equipment for preventive service, diagnose problems, send equipment out for repairs as needed and check all incoming equipment for proper repair; maintain file system for equipment requisitions, warranties and maintenance; assist with researching, testing, and ordering equipment; monitor and maintain health, safety and security in Printmaking Area, including regular posting of MSDS and other health and safety information; maintain Area bulletin boards and signage.

Requires an Associate or technical degree in related field and 1-3 years of experience; working knowledge of major print media, (i.e. relief, intaglio, lithography, screen-print, and papermaking); knowledge of computers and Photoshop, Illustrator, PageMaker/Quark software; woodworking, mechanical and hand tool skills; strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills a must. Physical requirements include lifting of equipment up to 70lbs and dexterity sufficient for working with delicate equipment.

Will assist instructors through posing for student artists as requested. Requires ability to pose for long, short and gesture poses. Must be able to remain still for 15–20 minutes and must be at least 21 years of age. Scheduled as needed on a temporary basis.
