Since the beginning of the 20th century, the validity of the notion that art and fashion are distinct and separate practices has eroded. Art as Fashion, Fashion as Art explores the collaborative relationship between the two. This course is intended for artists who are interested in the world of fashion and for fashion enthusiasts who are looking to approach design from a different, fresher perspective. We will work in class on assigned projects, explore unusual methods of making clothes, jewelry and accessories, learn how to design a comprehensive collection and put a portfolio together. You will be given readings and shown slides that illuminate the effect of current events, economics and art on the fashion collections being shown in Europe, Asia and the United States, as well as the ins and outs of the "rag trade." This course is open to students of all levels.

You will explore work by other painters and learn to think about your work in relation to these self-selected "mentors." Group critiques will be conducted occasionally during the semester to increase dialog, but the main focus of this course is your personal journey in painting. Please note: Students are expected to have achieved some mastery of basic painting skills.

PHT 2113-C1
2 Credits / Tuition: $895
PHT 2113-N1
Non-credit / Tuition: $685
With the rise of conceptual art and technological advancements in photography, the old idea of the portrait has turned from a document to an in depth examination of self. With the rise of identity politics looking at race, gender, sex, beauty, sexuality and cultural identity, the photograph has turned into a visual book; full of information beyond what the eye can see. In this course, you will explore the fundamentals to basic portrait photography, utilizing secrets from lighting effects to hand-made photographic techniques to produce images that make us think about contemporary portraiture. This course will be based within the digital medium so we can explore the technological advancements of "digital retouching" and editing which has altered the way that we look at the human form. You will work in Adobe Photoshop and learn to shoot with digital SLR cameras.
