About:
Museum School alumnus David Carroll (BFA ’65) will
speak on Thursday, February 15 at 12:30 pm in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s
Riley Seminar Room. Carroll was
recently named a 2006 MacArthur Fellow, winning the prestigious “genius”
grant. He will discuss his first encounter with a turtle at age eight, which led to his
immediate deep involvement with the natural world, his "passion-cum-obsession." Carroll
will trace his path in the difficult arena as a naturalist, illustrator, and author. He will discuss the
tensions between the human and natural realms and the tremendous negative impact
of human overpopulation and manipulation of the planet. He will speak of his SMFA experience,
realities of his subsequent teaching and lengthy freelance years, his book era,
and how the Burroughs Medal and MacArthur Fellowship have affected his life and
work.
