About Boston

There is no better time to come to Boston than in the summer. As cosmopolitan as it is small, Boston comes alive in the summer, whether you’re exploring the city's storied neighborhoods, like Beacon Hill and the North End, taking in a free outdoor concert in Harvard Square or at the famed Hatch Shell alongside the Charles River, catching a baseball game at Fenway Park, or participating in the nation's largest Fourth of July celebration.

Boston’s vibrant local art scene is always evident in the many fine art galleries from Newbury Street to the South End. Museums such as the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Harvard University Art Museums, MIT Museums, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum are easily accessible using the city’s extensive public transportation system.

What students have to say:

"I like Boston because it's easy to get around and pretty much a smaller version of New York City."
- Alexander Oakford (Summer Studio participant '06)

Living on Campus
The strong sense of community that develops between students is an important part of the Summer Studio Program. That spirit of creativity and collaboration continues in the Artist's Residence Hall at the end of each day and during the weekends.

The state-of-the-art residence hall, located two blocks from the School, is custom made for artists, with shared studio space on each floor. The experienced Resident Assistants who also live in the dorm foster a sense of community in the residence and lead weekend activities and field trips.

Housing is on a first-come, first-served basis, with preference given to applications received prior to April 2, 2008. If housing is filled, applicants will be placed on a waiting list and notified if space becomes available. The Artist's Residence Hall is owned by Massachusetts College of Art and operated by College Park Campus Partners, Inc.

Commuter Students
Local participants who choose not to stay in the Artists’ Residence Hall may enroll in the program as commuters. Commuters are required to attend all class sessions, Monday through Friday, as well as gallery, studio, and museum visits and artist talks. Studio space may be available for commuters to work in during the evenings. While on campus, commuters must follow the same rules and guidelines as residential students, including check-in and checkout procedures.

Food Service
Chef Mechaal Anik of the Museum School’s Café des Arts creates delicious, nutritionally-balanced meals. His carefully crafted menus include vegetarian, and vegan options. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in residential tuition; lunch is included with commuter tuition.

Residential and Student Life Policies
After you enroll you will receive a Student Policy Handbook. This handbook includes important rules of conduct for residents and commuters, and outlines policies to which you will be expected to adhere. All students and their parents or guardians must sign an acknowledgment that they have read the handbook and agree to abide by the guidelines.

Health Insurance
All students must have proof of health insurance to participate in the Summer Studio.

Art Supplies
Art supplies may be purchased at the Museum School Store using credit cards, debit cards or cash. Students may pre-order ArtKits, which contain essential materials required for the program.

Credit Value
Full credit value of the Summer Studio is 5 college credits.
