| Figuratively Speaking: Painting from the Figure is for individuals who wish to embrace the challenges of working from a live model while advancing their painting skills. The figure will be set in an environment to allow you to concentrate efforts on the orchestration of a painting as a whole and to entice the viewer into the painting and hold them there. Special consideration will be given to positioning the figure in a space, using light for increased drama and structure, improving your knowledge of color, and exploring the handling of paint and surface. We will work on four long poses, and you will explore painterly gesture studies and a sustained long pose simultaneously. Throughout the week we will review basic painting techniques, preparation of surfaces such as stretching canvas and paper, and explore a diverse group of contemporary figurative painters. Discussions and critiques will be held daily, including a final group critique scheduled at the end of the week. Some previous painting experience is recommended. |

| Explore the various possibilities that arise when you combine drawing and painting. We will work from a foundation of traditional drawing and painting methods and introduce several new approaches to help expand your options and range. You may choose to work exclusively with one medium, or experiment with a variety of materials. While one medium may be suitable most of the time, in some instances it may be appropriate to introduce other media in order to create openings and new possibilities (such as paint or color within the drawing, drawing in the painting, gouache within the ink wash, or collage in the painting). The objective of the intensive is to create a supportive atmosphere in which you will acquire a sound foundation for drawing and painting and discover a natural and personal direction. We will use the nude model as our point of departure and explore other personal subjects for individuals. |
