| What does it mean to create socially and politically responsible art in the twenty-first century? This course will explore both conceptually and practically the relationship of the artist to materials as a political reality. Specifically, we will investigate how three-dimensional object making relates to issues surrounding the environment and cultural, personal, and political identity, as well as the relationship between materials and the body. In addition, the politics of space and the relationship of both the object and the body to that space will be examined. You will walk away with new ways of viewing both sculpture and your own artistic practice and have an understanding of what it means to create simple objects that have the potential to be imbued with meaning. Participation and discussion will be an integral component of this intensive. |

| This beginning- to intermediate-level intensive offers a unique way to learn anatomy. You will work with live models and use Plasticine to sculpt an anatomical figure (écorché) from the inside out. You will begin by constructing a standing armature whose construction and naturalistic proportions mimics a skeleton. Through lecture, slides, and demonstration, you will learn and sculpt the layers of the body beginning with bone, followed by deep, intermediate, and lastly superficial muscles. The completed flayed figure will serve as a semi-permanent reference tool for your future use the studio. A field trip to a local museum, demonstrations, slides, lectures, and critiques will be part of the intensive. |
