The SMFA is pleased to announce
that Faith Ringgold will be the speaker at its 2008 Commencement Exercises.
Ringgold began her artistic career more than 35 years ago as a painter. Today,
she is best known for her painted story quilts—art that combines painting,
quilted fabric, and storytelling. She has exhibited in major museums around the
world and has works in the permanent collections of New
York museums
including the Studio Museum Harlem, the Solomon
R. Guggenheim Museum, the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the
Museum of Modern Art. Ringgold has written and
illustrated 11 children's books. Her first book,
Tar Beach (Dragonfly Books, 1996), was a Caldecott Honor Book and
winner of the Coretta Scott King Book Award for Illustrators. Ringgold has
received more than 75 awards, fellowships, citations and honors, including the
Solomon R. Guggenheim Fellowship and two awards from the National Endowment for
