Leah
Gauthier, MFA candidate and Post-Graduate Teaching Fellow,
is one of twelve artists/artist teams selected to exhibit in the
"2008 DeCordova Annual
Exhibition" on view at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park (Lincoln, MA)
May 10–August 17, 2008. Since 1989, the DeCordova's curators
have selected and showcased work by emerging, mid-career, and established
artists from around New England. Year after year, the exhibition emphasizes the quality
and variety of works rather than any single or overarching theme. Gauthier
is
an installation and performance artist and a socio-political activist, who works
with agricultural and culinary elements to create an interactive experience for
her viewers. She believes that "taste and smell are often neglected senses in
art, yet they are powerful provocateurs of involuntary memory." For this
exhibition, Gauthier will invite
visitors to participate in the harvesting, preparing, and tasting of heirloom
melons. Gauthier most recently exhibited her work, Tomatoes, in a group
show "Art
Ventures" at the Revolving
Museum
(Lowell,
MA). Photo credit: Leah Gauthier, Tomatoes, 2007. Heirloom tomato plants, mixed media, and performance. Photo by the artist.
