This summer a number of
undergraduate students are furthering their education through internships.
Students will not only receive studio credit, but also will acquire valuable
work experience well before they enter the job market. The diverse range of
positions includes gallery work, development experience, photography assistance,
and much more.
Andrea Abarca (BFA candidate) is an arts administration intern at the
International Sculpture Center (Hamilton, NJ). The International Sculpture Center (ISC) is a nonprofit
organization designed to educate and expand public knowledge about sculpture
and
its unique contribution to society. Abarca provides general administrative
assistance to the director’s office staff, including work on the Web site and
spearheading an archive of the ISC publication, Sculpture.
Karina Deutsch (BFA candidate) is a photography assistant intern at
Mike Rosenthal Photography (West Hollywood, CA). Mike Rosenthal is an internationally
renowned
fashion/celebrity photographer based
in New
York
and
Los
Angeles. He is
currently working his fifth season as guest photographer and judge on
“America’s Next Top Model.” Deutsch assists with
studio and
location fashion shoots in addition to office duties such as location scouting,
bookings, image retouching, and
model casting.
Marie Giguere (BFA candidate) is a gallery management intern at the
June Fitzpatrick Gallery (Portland, ME). The internship is designed
to provide
maximum exposure to and
experience of the essentials of gallery management. Giguere’s responsibilities
include
interacting with exhibiting artists, writing and designing press materials, and
taking an active role in all elements of an exhibition.
Katie Harris (BFA candidate) is an on-site photographic
assistant/intern at the Jim Dow Photography Studio
(Belmont,
MA). Jim Dow is an internationally known photographer
specializing in fine art photography for exhibitions, publications,
and
gallery sales. Harris is working closely with Dow preparing for a September
exhibition at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (Cambridge, MA) by assisting him during a one-week shooting trip in
Mexico
City and organizing
the results for the show.
Jose Marcel Reyes (BFA candidate) is the Teen Arts Council development
assistant intern at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA). The Teen Arts Council (TAC) is a program
designed
to creatively engage teens visiting the MFA with opportunities to voice ideas,
develop projects, and hone skills as MFA teen ambassadors to local communities.
Reyes contributes to program planning, curriculum development, and
research.
Samara Watkiss (Combined Degree candidate) is the pre-press and
editorial research assistant intern at the Generation Europe Foundation (GEF)
(Brussels, Belgium). GEF promotes education and awareness of current
affairs amongst young Europeans through information from publications and
courses to seminars and competitions. Their flagship publication, Europa
Diary, is a source of practical information about current affairs aimed at
15 to 19-year-olds. More than 2,300,000 diaries in more than 20 languages were
published in 2007. Watkiss proposes new designs for GEF publications (covers,
diary pages, and press kits), writes text for publications, and conducts Web
research. Terrance
Wong
(BFA in Art Education candidate) is a display artist intern at Urban Outfitters
(Cambridge,
MA).
Urban Outfitters is a unique retailer specializing in women’s
and
men’s apparel and housewares. Store environments are
created
entirely in-house by creative teams consisting of
Merchandisers
and
Display Artists. In this hands-on, multi-disciplinary internship Wong will
employ skills such as silk-screening, stenciling, painting, carpentry, and
large-scale art installations.
