Active Art: Photographs, mixed media, installation by Youth-Art-in-Action, Boston and The AjA Project and DCP, Bogotá, Colombia is on view at Bromfield Gallery July 5–22. Featuring work by youth involved in the award-winning Youth-Art-in-Action program, the exhibition was curated by Heidi M. Marston (FY '03, Dip '02, BFA '97) and Steve Aishman (MFA '01, Post-Bac '98). Youth-Art-In-Action (YAIA) was founded at the SMFA in 1997 as an intensive arts education and leadership development program. Youth participants from YAIA join Museum School students enrolled in Public Art/Public Action to collaborate on public art projects whose contents reflect or are derived from issues in and around community. The program currently collaborates with community partners MissionSafe, the Chinese Economic Development Council's Mentoring Program, and the Asian Community Development Corporation's Young Leaders Network (YLN). The mission of The AjA (an acronym in Spanish for supporting
self-sufficiency) Project and DCP, from Bogotá, Colombia, is to empower refugee
and underprivileged youth through educational programs. The youth learn
vocational, technical, and photographic skills. Based in San Diego, The AjA
Project runs the "Shooting Cameras for Peace" program in Colombia. For more information about the exhibition, visit www.bromfieldartgallery.com.
