The sequence of
course offerings for the MAT is linked to the program as a whole. Massachusetts
requires all candidates of Visual Art for grades Pre-K-8 or grades 5–12 to pass
the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL).*
Education
Academic Courses at Tufts University: Human
Development and Learning, Exceptionalities in Learning, and Foundations of
Education.
Studio
Courses at SMFA: Four
“blocks” of elective studio courses.
Art
Education Academic Courses at SMFA: Courses
include Art Education Foundation, Field Studies in Art with pre-practicum
experiences, Art Education Curriculum, Student Teaching Practicum in Art
Teaching, and Seminar in Student Teaching.
Field
Experience: MAT candidates
working toward Initial Teacher Licensure complete pre-practicum experiences and
a minimum of a 300-hour practicum.
Pre-Practicum: Pre-practicum
internships serve as
research for a field studies course in art education and occur in the fall
semester. Students spend one day a week in an elementary or secondary school art
classroom where they observe
and assist an art teacher. They also assist at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA),
during one class a week, in the Museum Learning and Public Programs courses for
young people. The weekly seminar in Field Studies provides a forum for
reflection on their experiences in schools and the MFA.
Practicum: The full-time
student teaching internship, known as the practicum, occurs in the spring
semester. Student teachers continue in a mentored relationship with full-time,
licensed, and experienced teachers of art. Student teachers gradually assume the
responsibilities of the art teacher at their internship site. Interacting in a
variety of ways, they do everything from team teaching to leading full classes
to assuming administrative duties.
Additional
licensure: Matriculating candidates may prepare for additional level licensure
in visual art by completing course work required for the new level license, in
addition to the program requirements.
The procedures for
applying for teacher licensure form the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are
explained in detail on the Tufts Department of Education Web site. Please visit the licensure
page for more details.
