The Bachelor of Fine Arts Program (BFA) provides excellent preparation for work in a complex, rapidly changing, and multicultural world. Combining studio work with academic studies, the BFA is designed for students who wish to complete an art-focused bachelor’s degree. BFA students are enrolled at both the Museum School and Tufts University, and graduate with a BFA degree from Tufts. Your development is enriched and informed by the combination of intense studio experience and rigorous study of the liberal arts. You’ll learn to write clearly and to think critically and creatively. You’ll gain a deep understanding of art, art history, and art theory—and of other disciplines ranging from the humanities to social science to technology. The BFA Program consists of 84 credits of studio art,
plus 14 academic courses*: - Five courses in art history
- Two in English/writing
- One in the humanities
- One in the social sciences
- One in culture and language
- One in science/technology
- Three electives
You choose the studio art courses you take in the SMFA's all-elective curriculum with assistance from advisors, who will work with you to shape your art education throughout the program. Your art history and academic courses are taught by Tufts faculty, both at the SMFA and on the Tufts campus in Medford, a free shuttle ride away. The professional directions you can take with the BFA are infinite. Many BFA graduates pursue advanced study, such as MFA or MAT Programs; others launch careers as practicing artists or in creative work.
