Supplement your BFA with a master’s degree in just 12 months: one summer plus one academic year.
Planning to teach art? The SMFA’s new BFA Plus MAT Program will prepare you for a successful classroom career—in a lot less time than you might expect.
In this program, you'll learn to inspire children in PK-12 schools and nurture their artistic vision. You will engage in student teaching under the guidance of highly skilled mentors, while discussing the experiences of a variety of art educators in seminar courses.
The program, offered in partnership with Tufts University, allows you to earn both a BFA and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Art Education in just 12 additional months of study. Your MAT in Art Education will make you eligible to apply for a Massachusetts teaching license of Visual Art for grades PK-8 or 5-12.
If you are interested in the BFA Plus MAT Program, we encourage you to gain teaching experience through some of the internships offered through our Artist’s Resource Center and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. We also recommend that you take the following two art education courses during your undergraduate studies, which count toward your liberal arts requirements: • Art Education & Human Development with Multicultural Perspectives •
Art Education & Civic Engagement with Special Populations
The BFA Plus MAT is part of the TuftsPlus program and is open to students who matriculate directly from the BFA into the MAT. TuftsPlus offers tuition scholarships of up to 50 percent and a streamlined application process.
