Carlos Noguera (BFA in Art Education '07) knew early on that he
wanted to be an artist. In fact, his family moved to Miami from Venezuela when
he was in 10th grade so he could attend an art and design high
school. But it wasn’t until his senior year of high school that he realized he
wanted to teach as well.
“I want to at least shoot for change,”
Carlos says. “I see the kids around me, their attitude and how they perceive the
world, and I want to make it different.”
At the Museum School, Carlos has been
teaching school groups at the MFA since his first semester. Now, for his BFA in Arts Education
practicum, he’s teaching full time at an elementary school in Cambridge. “As a
teacher, I can open kids’ minds to new possibilities,” says Carlos. “I see my
job as letting them know they can speak through an artistic medium. If a kid
says, ‘I can’t draw, because my picture isn’t accurate,’ I ask, ‘Is that what
it’s about? Making a perfect drawing? What is perfect, anyway?’ It’s not about
making something perfect; it’s about looking at the world in new ways.”
