The Museum School provides health services for its students through the Simmons College Health Center. Counseling services are available through the Counseling and Mental Health Service. In addition, the School offers a comprehensive health insurance plan to all students.

The School is committed to supporting the needs of students with disabilities, and we make every effort to provide reasonable accommodations where necessary.

Simmons Health Center
The Simmons Health Center is located on Simmons College residence campus—about a 10-minute walk from SMFA. The Health Center provides primary medical care on site, and refers students who require specialty care to providers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard teaching hospital.

If you are covered by the SMFA insurance plan (Consolidated Health Plans) you may use the Simmons Health Center and the Health Center will bill Consolidated for your visit.

If you are covered by any other insurance plan you are welcome to use the Simmons Health Center but you must pay at the time of your visit.  If you wish, the Health Center will provide you with a receipt for your visit that you may later submit to your insurer for reimbursement.

For more information about the Simmons Health Center, visit the center's Web site or call 617-521-1002.

Counseling and Mental Health Service
The Counseling and Mental Health Service  provides free counseling services to Museum School students at the Museum School. Counselors work with students on personal problems, psychological or emotional distress, and academic and work difficulties including artist’s block. When more extensive counseling is required, students may be referred to qualified community resources. All interviews are strictly confidential.

Health Insurance
The SMFA offers student health insurance through Consolidated Health Plans.  Massachusetts state law requires all college students enrolled at least three-quarter time to have health insurance, so you must enroll in the School’s plan unless you have proof of comparable coverage.

If you subscribe to the SMFA insurance plan, you’ll use Simmons College Health Center for your health needs. At Simmons, the health plan pays 100 percent of your doctor’s office visits—you’ll have no co-payments or deductibles.  Note that you are required by the school insurance plan to come to the Health Center for a referral before you see a specialist.

If you do not have school insurance you can use the Simmons Health Center and pay at the time of your visit or go to another provider who will accept your insurance.  Check the website of your insurance company (Blue Cross, for example) to find an approved list of area providers.  If you are planning to use an area provider other than Simmons note that it is often difficult to get last minute appointments, so you should contact those provider's offices when you arrive at school and ask for information on how to become a new patient.

For further information about coverage or to waive or enroll for the School's plan, see Consolidated Health Plans. You may contact the Business Office for a brochure.
