Artist's Resource Center

An artist’s career is a living thing—it needs care and attention. The Artist’s Resource Center (ARC) is a unique resource offering career advising, job links, internships, professional-focus courses, and community-partnership opportunities through its Institute for Art and Civic Engagement.

The ARC empowers artists to think expansively about myriad ways they contribute to society, equips them with skill-building opportunities, and helps them develop personal strategies for success—a unique path for each artist. ARC staff members are committed to fostering a long-term relationship with you, even after you graduate.

We encourage you to peruse the following links for an overview of ARC services and resources. Please contact Catherine Tutter at 617-369-3603; ctutter@smfa.edu or Katherine Mitchell at 617-369-3636; kmitchell@smfa.edu if you have questions, need assistance, or would like to set up an appointment.

Here’s some of what you’ll find at the ARC:

Career Advising
The ARC offers one-on-one sessions to help you plot your career in the arts and identify your skills, interests and career goals. Learn to write a resume, refine your ability to project the voice of a professional artist, and broaden your understanding of contemporary creative practices in the world.

artSource
artSource is a searchable online database with active arts-related employment, internships, grants, residencies, exhibitions, public art commissions, and community resources. artSource also features an ever-growing employer/organization directory, a Resource Library with extensive Web links, and a calendar to help keep you organized and informed.

Internships for Studio Credit
The ARC lists a wide range of internship opportunities in many professional areas, ranging from arts administration to new media and technology. The ARC offers extensive preparation, support and guidance throughout your internship.

Dynamic Courses
The ARC offers for-credit courses that focus on the most current professional practices in both the public and private realm. Course offerings include Professional Practices: Artist at Work and ARC Internships.

Community Partnerships
The Institute for Art and Civic Engagement (IACE) provides you with the resources and support to engage in artistic projects, internships, and other initiatives that help create innovative strategies for civic participation and engagement within our communities, both local and global.

Reference Materials
ARC houses a wealth of information pertaining to all aspects of the professional artist’s career. The ARC’s literature racks abound with handouts, Web directories, and in-house publications. In addition, when you set up a career advising appointment with an ARC staff member we can work together to access online resources pertaining to career development, opportunities, critical needs, open studios, arts advocacy and general research.
