FACULTY GUIDE TO PLACING MATERIALS ON RESERVE

Library-owned materials or instructors' personal copies may be placed on reserve at the library circulation desk.
Telephone: 617-369-3650
Fax: 317-424-6271
E-mail: library@smfa.edu

SMFA Library Books
To put SMFA library books on Course Reserve, the instructor or TA must complete a Reserve Request PDF form, including the loan period and date these materials can come off reserve. Please allow one week for processing.

Books Not Owned by the Library
To request that a title be purchased and placed on reserve, instructors should submit a Reserve Purchase Request PDF. Newly published materials take several weeks to be processed and cataloged; out-of-print books may take much longer.  Instructors will be notified when the library receives the ordered materials.

Personal Copies
The library will put personal copies on reserve if we are unable to acquire a requested book. A completed Personal Copy PDF form must accompany personal copies.  The library can not take responsibility for any damage done to personal copies placed on reserve.

Course Readers and other Photocopied Material
Course Readers and other photocopied material must conform to the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States code). A signed Copyright Release PDF form indicating the course title and instructor must accompany photocopied materials. All photocopies, except those that are copyrighted by the individual faculty member (i.e. lecture notes, exams, etc.) or those for which the instructor has obtained copyright permission, will be taken off reserve at the end of the semester and returned to the faculty member.

Individual and Class Library Instruction
The goal of library research instruction is to equip students with the skills to readily locate, evaluate, and utilize information so that they may work independently, efficiently, and confidently in any library research environment.  Instruction includes searching techniques for the FLO Online catalog, which includes the holdings of the SMFA library, most FLC libraries, and the Museum of Fine Arts libraries.  It also covers various reference resources and collections inside the library, whether electronic or in print, as well as appropriate general internet resources, search engines, and specialized databases. The library encourages you to work closely with the staff member who will be presenting the lecture, so that the instruction will be tailored to the specific needs of the individuals class. Click here for the Library Instruction PDF.

Requests for Books and Other Materials
Faculty members are encouraged to suggest items in their subject area to be purchased for the library collection. When suggesting items, please provide as much information as possible, including date needed by and suggested vendor. The Purchase Request PDF form will help expedite your request. Requests can also be made in person.
