At the SMFA at Tufts, you’ll find exceptional teachers who are expert mentors as well as working artists. You’ll find a curriculum designed to push you to explore an idea through many media. You’ll find avant garde art that bridges the gap between woodworking and animation; papermaking and sound; performance and photography. At the same time, you will find the resources of a research intensive university and the course offerings of a liberal arts institution. Our students truly have the best of both worlds – with state-of-the-art studios in the heart of the city of Boston as well as more than 70 academic programs and 300 student groups on Tufts’ Medford campus.
Since 1876, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts has been educating artists by providing the respect, learning opportunities, and unique level of freedom that students need to develop and succeed. Now, as a part of Tufts University, the SMFA will continue to serve the academic artist through research, liberal arts course work, and intensive studio training. Our students will become interdisciplinary artists and thinkers, ready to tackle tomorrow’s problems creatively and collaboratively.
