PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Artist Resource Center

Artists, as creative professionals, are challenged to think expansively about myriad roles they play in society. From the day you begin your education at SMFA, and throughout the development of your career, the Artist Resource Center (ARC) helps you develop a successful, meaningful creative practice in the context of the wider professional world. Career advising, employment listings, internships, courses, opportunities for civic engagement, and relationship-building with ARC staff over the span of your career are all here for you.

Here's what you will find:

Guidance Sessions
The ARC offers one-on-one sessions to help you clarify your goals, identify your skills, and access concrete resources about contemporary creative practices. Guidance on resume writing, cover letters, proposals, and engaging in social media technologies empower you to take next steps in career-building.

Online
ArtSource is a searchable online database with extensive arts-related employment, internships, grants, residencies, exhibitions, public art commissions, and community resources. Additionally, artSource features an ever-growing employer/organization directory, a resource library with extensive Web links, and a calendar to help keep you organized and informed.

Internships
The ARC provides support and guidance for students seeking to undertake credit-bearing internships. This experiential program helps you connect your studio practice to real-world professional environments with practical hands-on training and skill-building.

Professional Practice Courses
The ARC offers credit-bearing courses that focus on current professional practices that engage artists today.

Art and Civic Engagement
The ARC is committed to the role of art and civic engagement in contemporary creative practice and helps you develop strategies for civic participation within our community, both local and global.
