Ongoing - Histories of Now: Six Artists from Cairo

Opening to Boston audiences this winter during the one year anniversary of the first mass protests in Tahrir Square, "Histories of Now: Six Artists from Cairo" brings together work by some of the most inspiring and influential video and new media artists working in Egypt today, including a multi-channel video installation by the late Ahmed Basiony featured in the Egyptian Pavilion of the 54th Venice Biennale.

March 1 - Library Sounds: Jed Speare

The Library Sounds series kicks off with Jed Speare who is, among other things, a sound artist with an interest in field recordings and musique concrete. Jed acts as artistic director of Mobius Artists Space which has been a home to sound and performance artists in Boston for the past 35 years. He'll be performing and talking about the 30th anniversary of his Smithsonian Folkways album Cable Car Soundscapes. Check out his full bio at www.mobius.org .

Over 100 artists in SMFA's Master of Fine Arts program will hold their second annual Grad Open Studios event, March 2 + 3, 6–9 pm.

The vast array of work on display by students from across the United States and abroad creates a unique chance to see inside the daily life of an MFA student.

Janie Geiser is an internationally recognized experimental filmmaker and visual/theater artist whose work is known for its sense of mystery, its detailed evocation of self-contained worlds, and its strength of design. SBInc. is a student comprised, student-run group working toward the unification of the student body by supporting clubs, groups and events. Any student can propose an event, club or group. SBInc will review and discuss proposals and offer funding for approved proposals. SBInc. membership is open to all students. March 8 - Library Sounds: Shawn Greenlee

In this second installment of the Library Sounds series, Shawn Greenlee joins us for a performance and artist's talk. Shawn has been working through performances and sound installations that transform visual images into sound and is performing in town this month with Cut Hands (William Bennett/Whitehouse). March 8 - Visiting Artist Lecture: Steve Almond

Author Steve Almond joins us for an evening of art and politics. A widely acclaimed short story writer and essayist, Almond's recent books include the collection of stories God Bless America and non-fiction titles Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life and Candyfreak: A Journey through the Chocolate Underbelly of America. Almond writes for the Boston Globe and the Los Angeles Times, and he taught creative writing at Boston College until 2006 when his open letter of resignation was published in the Globe as a response to the college's selection of Condoleeza Rice as commencement speaker.

March 8 - Visiting Artist Lecture: John Divola

"Divola's series is titled 'Dark Star,' a point of light in the universe too faint for direct observation. His domestic ruins suggest social collapse, but these quietly alarming photographs also resonate within our cold cosmos of hidden black sites and secret renditions. Alison Elizabeth Taylor has become well known for reinvigorating the Renaissance craft of marquetry, or intarsia wood inlay, a medium once made popular during the unprecedented age of luxury in Louis XIV's Court of Versailles. By choosing a medium that is typically associated with wealth and power to portray dystopian scenes of everyday life, Taylor creates a tension between the luxurious connotations of the material and a certain abjectness of the subject matter. Leslie Thornton has been at the very forefront of experimental film and media since the 1980s, having completed more than thirty film and video works and installations. An acknowledged pioneer in media, Thornton's early film and video work first addressed the interplay between cinema, video, installation and improvisation in a manner that prefigured many contemporary media strategies. "Eileen Quinlan describes herself as a still-life photographer. Born in 1972, she has become well known in recent years as one of a cohort of photographers—Walead Beshty and Liz Deschenes are notable others—who, following in the footsteps of practitioners from Moholy-Nagy to James Welling, have been disassembling the layered apparatus of photography (light, subject, optics, chemistry, bytes, the material image) and finding new means of expression.  Read more...

March 29 - Library Sounds: Angela Sawyer + Vic Rawlings

In this last performance in the Library Sounds series, Angela Sawyer and Vic Rawlings will be performing and leading an improvisation workshop. In their description they will: "lead a discussion, present demonstrations and generally muse on the subject of improvisation in some of the forms it takes in the current music scene around us. It will range from personal perspectives to some cantilevered-over-the-abyss general statements." Angela is in a dizzying array of bands around town and runs the beloved Weirdo Records in Central Square. Vic primarily performs with a cello modified by personally designed electronic elements. March 30 - Graduate Colloquium: Artists Collectives and Artistic Collectivism
