Ongoing - Something Along Those Lines

Organized in response to Sol LeWitt's 1971 Wall Drawing #118, which was conceived and installed at SMFA that year, "Something Along Those Lines," is a dynamic group exhibition featuring nine modern and contemporary artists who blend conceptual, sculptural and performative engagements with the formal elements of drawing: Adel Abdessemed, Ann Carlson + Mary Ellen Strom, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Gego, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Fred Sandback and Lawrence Weiner.

September 13 - Lecture: Néstor García Canclini

In conjunction with Boston University's Lectures in Criticism series, Néstor García Canclini of the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, Mexico City will lecture on: "Creatividad Precaria: Los Jóvenes en una Cultura Postindustrial" ("Precarious Creativity: Youth in a Post-Industrial Culture," translated by Victoria Livingstone).

Enter at the Huntington Avenue entrance to receive a ticket.

September 19 - 2012 Beckwith Lecture: Boston's First Sol LeWitt Drawing

Veronica Roberts, Director of Research, Sol LeWitt Wall Drawing Catalogue Raisonné and Adjunct Curator of Contemporary Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, will deliver the lecture "Boston's First Sol LeWitt Wall Drawing" on September 19, focusing on Wall Drawing # 118, which was first installed at SMFA in 1971. Delving into the challenges and rewards of researching this artist's unique body of conceptual art, she will also highlight the special importance LeWitt attached to his collaborations with art students at SMFA and schools across the country and abroad.

Established in 1978 by Leo and Betty Beckwith (daughter Carol is an alumna), the Beckwith series was created to further SMFA student development by featuring artists and cultural thinkers of national and international stature.

SMFA lectures at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) are free and open to the public. Attendees must obtain free tickets from a kiosk or ticket desk at the MFA to gain admittance.

September 20 - Visiting Artist Lecture: Perry Bard

Perry Bard works individually and collaboratively on media projects for public space addressing issues of representation, access, distribution and the collision of then and now. Her work has been presented at MoMA NY, IDFA, Toronto, Moscow, Rotterdam Film Festivals, Ars Electronica, Transmediale, Montreal and Sao Paolo Biennials.

"From 1940 to 1944 the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg, headed by members of the Nazi party, and Sonderstab Bildende Kunst, its fine arts division, amassed over 22,000 artworks mainly from Jewish collections. They also seized degenerate art, which included many outstanding examples of early modernism. This collection was housed in the "Room of Martyrs" and sold and exchanged to finance the war." – Heide Fasnacht
