On view January 17–February 21, 2010, "EXTINCT!...Endangered Species and Habitats" is a multi media exhibition of work by SMFA artists exploring endangered species and their shrinking habitats. The show is co-curated by faculty member Erica H. Adams and MFA candidate John Guy Petruzzi at the Brush Art Gallery & Studios in Lowell.

Visiting Artists Talk in Conjunction with Visiting International Performance Artists Class

Born in Surakarta Indonesia 1969, Melati Suryodarmo lives and works in Gross Gleidingen, Germany and Solo, Indonesia: "Crossing the boundaries of cultural and political encounters has been a challenge that stimulates me discovering new identification. An effort to find identity is yet a dangerous act of losing the ground of origin. For me, the process of making artwork is a life long research that never stops me to put myself inside the metamorphic constellation. I intend to touch the fluid border between the body and its environment through my art works. I aim to create a concentrated level of intensity without the use of narrative structures. Talking about politics, society or psychology makes no sense to me if the nerves are not able to digest the information. I love it when a performance reaches a level of factual absurdity."

On view February 11–March 3, the "Student Annual Exhibition" presents the largest annual overview of current work by students of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It is based on a competitive selection of works chosen from approximately 200 entries by a jury of arts professionals unaffiliated with the Museum School.

The Student Annual jury also selects the recipients of the Stella and Sumner Cooper Award (for work in metals, glass and ceramics) and the Will and Elena Barnet Award (for work that "embodies the formal elements of painting and composition and the principles of structural design").

Also included in the Annual are winning works by the recipients of the prestigious Dana Pond Award in painting, the Boit Award (for work created last summer independently of classroom assignments) and the Yousuf Karsh Prize in photography, each chosen by independent juries.

The Student Annual Exhibition celebrates artists who are on the threshold of their field with exciting anticipation of their creative futures.

London-based photographer Neil Drabble's portraits and editorial works have appeared in numerous magazines including Vogue and GQ, and are featured in museum and private collections in the United States and Europe. His first book, Tree Tops Tall, was published by Steidl in 2003.

Visiting Artists Talk in Conjunction with Visiting International Performance Artists Class

Myriam Laplante is a Canadian artist living in Italy who started performing while she was a student at Ottawa University in the early seventies. After concentrating on painting, installations and photography and started performing again in 1991, while continuing her "gallery" work.

Her early performances were essentially self-portraits. By embodying circus side-show attractions (bearded lady, dancing monkey), a crying ghost or a mutant mermaid, she addresses alienation and the difficulty to communicate, the refusal to adapt to society and the cynicism of the dominant sects. She re-stages the internal tension between desire and memory, power and submission.

Her more recent installation and performance works are cynical replies triggered by the absurdities of contemporary society and power-dealing politics on every level.
Her work is in the public collections of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna (Rome) and the Museo di Arte Contemporanea (Rome), the Muse du Qubec (Qubec) and the National Museum of Photography (Ottawa).

Jonathan Van Dyke's work has been described as "not making paintings, but orienting the energies that surround painting." At once organic and industrial, Van Dykes hybrid creations draw from the disparate histories of feminism, happenings, and abstract expressionism. Jonathan lives and works in Brooklyn and will be here on February 23

The Museum School and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) invite you to Wandelprobe, a special event exploring the creative process. Wander through the School's "Student Annual Exhibition" guided by musicians and visual artists who will demonstrate the evolution of art from conception to performance to public unveiling. Led by members of BMOP's The Score Board, a group of New England-based composers, the evening features Museum School artists Unju Sim Goetemann and Luca deGaetano and BMOP musicians.
