SMFA offers two certificate programs: Graphic Design and Illustration. Both provide credentials that represent proficiency and skill, leading toward a career in the field. In step with SMFA's pedagogy, as a certificate student you communicate regularly with an advisor to construct a highly personalized path of study to achieve your artistic and creative potential.

The certificate programs are intended for students with limited formal training in art and design, as well as those with a fine arts background or experience in their field. Consisting of four required and four elective courses, the program may be completed in two years of part-time study or one year of full-time study.

Fundamental courses in design and illustration enable you to begin building your portfolio and to develop new creative skills. The flexible and multidisciplinary education offered at SMFA allows you to select electives from the wide range of studio courses offered each term. You also may participate in the internship program, which offers hands-on opportunities with art organizations, design firms and other local businesses.

Graphic Design Certificate

Illustration Certificate

Program Requirements
The Certificate program in Illustration provides you with a solid foundation in the basic practical and theoretical skills of illustration. You may choose to focus on a particular aspect of illustration
commercial illustration, computer illustration, animation or book illustrationor you may acquire general skills to be used in a wide variety of activities within the field.

FAQ

How do I enroll in a Certificate Program?
Applicants apply to the program by completing a Certificate Program Application, either online, by mail or in person. One of the great things about our Certificate Programs, is that you may enroll at any time, regardless of whether you have already completed some required courses or are just starting out. There is a one time enrollment fee of $150 that must accompany your application.

What courses must I take to complete a Certificate?
Each program consists of eight courses: four required courses and four elective courses. A variety of these courses are offered in the fall, spring and summer semesters (listed above).

How long will it take me to complete a Certificate Program?
Students usually complete the program in one and a half to two years by taking one to two courses per semester. We also offer an option to complete the program in one year with full-time study.

What is the total tuition fee to complete a Certificate?
Based on current per course tuition rates, enrollment and registration fees, we estimate the Certificate programrequires approximately $7,900 to complete, including all eight courses, registration and application fees.

Internships
Certificate students may elect to participate in SMFA's Internship Program. Administered by the Artist Resource Center, the program offers guidance and support leading to opportunities to for work with arts organizations, design firms and other local businesses, allowing design students to gain practical experience and skills.

To apply for an internship, you must be enrolled in the Certificate Program in Graphic Design or Illustration and you must have completed the four required courses. To be selected, you must meet the requirements of the intern sponsor and have a faculty advisor to supervise the internship. If you are selected for an internship position, you must enroll with the Continuing Education office and pay the appropriate tuition and fees.

The internships have a value of two credits. A unit of two credits earned in the internship program will count as a one-course elective in the Certificate Program in Graphic Design.
