SMFA COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY AND EVENTS

SMFA's 2014 commencement ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 18 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (map).

Mandatory Meeting for Graduating Students
Wednesday, May 14, 2014

*There will be a separate meeting on Thursday, May 15 from 9:00am-10:00am for graduating MFA students who are unable to attend the Wednesday Mandatory Meeting due to Thesis obligations at the Cyclorama. Location TBD.

At the mandatory meeting, students will be able to:
  • Pick up tickets for the SMFA commencement ceremony
  • Get instructions for the SMFA commencement ceremony
  • Complete graduation marching cards (so that we get your name right)
  • Graduating undergraduate students must complete the Graduation Degree Worksheet in order to complete the graduation process.
  • Studio Diploma students are required to complete the Studio Diploma Petition form before graduating.
The SMFA ceremony is a ticketed event, and space is extremely limited. As of today, each graduate is guaranteed two (2) tickets for family/friends and one(1) ticket for him/herself. Please check back for updates as there is a potential that more tickets per graduate will become available.

You will not be able to enter the commencement ceremony without a ticket! Any tickets not picked up at the Mandatory Meeting will be available on a first come first serve basis at Student Affairs starting at 9:00am on Friday, May 16. Graduates who come on Friday for additional tickets will be able to pick up one ticket when they reach the front of the line, but may return to the back of the line and wait for additional tickets as many times as they wish or until tickets run out. There will also be standing room only tickets available when seats run out. You must have your own SMFA ID on you to pick up tickets.

If you do NOT plan to attend the SMFA commencement ceremony (Sunday, May 18, 6:00pm-7:30pm), please email Student Affairs at

Graduating Student Reception for Families and Friends of the Graduates

This reception is for graduating students and their guests. It is a chance to explore the graduating student exhibitions, including Senior Thesis open studios, and celebrate with food, drink, and great company. Free admission.

Parking: In addition to street parking, guests may park in the MFA's Huntington Lot, the Fenway Lot, or the Museum Road Garage, all of which have entrances on Museum Road, and have their ticket validated at SMFA (
map).

Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Thesis Opening Reception

Visit one of Boston's most dazzling spaces – the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts – to experience the culmination projects for our graduating MFA candidates. A private reception for MFA graduates and VIP guests will be held at 5:30pm, followed by a larger celebration open to the entire SMFA community and the public at 7:30pm. All members of the SMFA community and their guests are invited. Free admission.

Both Tufts and SMFA commencement ceremonies will take place on Sunday, May 18, 2014.

Tufts Commencement Ceremony (Phase I)
All BFA, MFA, and MAT degree candidates (not diploma (DIP) or certificate (PB) candidates) are invited to participate

When to arrive: Degree candidates should assemble at 8:30am at Miller Hall

All Tufts schools participate in Phase I, the All-University commencement ceremony. It includes the Academic Procession, the awarding of honorary degrees, the All-University Commencement address, recognition of faculty emeriti, presentation of degree candidates by school and the granting of degrees by the Tufts University Board of Trustees. here. SMFA students do not walk across a stage and receive their diploma at this ceremony. That happens later at the SMFA commencement ceremony.

Tickets: Tickets are not required for Phase I of the Tufts Commencement Ceremony.

Dress Code: If you plan to attend the Tufts ceremony, you should be aware that participating students wear caps and gowns. SMFA students are not required to wear caps and gowns, but if you wish to do so, you may purchase one through the Tufts University Bookstore
website, or by calling the bookstore at 617-627-3468. Bachelor's gown, cap, tassel, and announcement package cost $57.98. Master's gown, cap, and tassel cost $49.98. Orders must be placed by March 1, 2014.

Combined Degree students will be contacted by Tufts to see if they wish to receive their degree at Tufts or SMFA.

Webcast: A live webcast of Phase I will be available to view starting at 8:00 a.m. on Commencement Sunday.

When to arrive: Degree candidates and their guests should plan arrive at the Museum's State Street Corporation Fenway Entrance at 5:15pm.

Degree candidates in all SMFA programs (BFA, DIP, PB, MFA, and MAT) participate in the SMFA commencement ceremony. It includes a formal procession, student and guest speakers, the announcement of the Excellence in Teaching and the Russell T. Smith awards, and the presentation of degrees, diplomas, and post-baccalaureate certificates.

Tickets: The SMFA ceremony is a ticketed event, and space is extremely limited. As of today, each graduate is guaranteed 2 tickets for family/friends and 1 ticket for him/herself. Please check back for updates as there is a potential that more tickets per graduate will become available.

Degree candidates will pick up their tickets at the MANDATORY MEETING FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS on Wednesday, May 14 at 3:30pm in Remis Auditorium. You will not be able to enter the commencement ceremony without a ticket!

Dress Code: The SMFA commencement ceremony dress code does not include caps and gowns, but degree candidates are encouraged to dress up for the occasion. See the
slideshow of last year's commencement to get an idea of the dress code.

Diplomas: Graduates will pick up their diplomas immediately following the ceremony in the Sharf Visitors Center at the MFA. If you are not able to attend the SMFA Commencement, your diploma will be mailed to you. If you do not plan to attend the SMFA Commencement ceremony, please notify Student Affairs (
studentaffairs@smfa.edu) as soon as possible to forfeit your tickets and arrange to have your diploma mailed.

Open Accounts: Tuition, lab fees, library fines, etc., must be paid in full by Wednesday, April 16, 2014.

Who are the commencement speakers at this year's ceremony?
The 2014 SMFA commencement speakers will be announced in the spring. A student speaker and a guest speaker will give remarks. In 2013, Ryan Hawk (BFA '13) was the student speaker, and curator/critic
Hou Hanru delivered the keynote address.

Student Affairs will ask for nominations for a student speaker in the spring.

How many tickets does each degree candidate get?

The SMFA ceremony is a ticketed event, and space is extremely limited. As of today, each graduate is guaranteed 2 tickets for family/friends and 1 ticket for him/herself. Please check back for updates as there is a potential that more tickets per graduate will become available.

What should I wear to commencement?

How many students are expected to graduate with the Class of 2014?
About 220 students are expected to graduate from SMFA in May, 2014 across all five SMFA programs (BFA, DIP, PB, MFA, and MAT). Not everyone participates in the ceremony, but we expect an attendance of about 800 people to the SMFA commencement ceremony.

Do children need tickets to the SMFA commencement ceremony?
All guests over the age of three must have a ticket to the ceremony and will be required to show it to enter the Museum.

How do I know if I have enough credits to graduate?
If you are unsure of your credits to graduate, make an appointment with an Academic Advisor. To schedule a meeting with an Advisor:

When should my family arrive in Boston for commencement?
Your family should arrive in Boston by Friday, May 16 if they plan to attend the Graduating Student Reception for Family and Friends of the Graduates (5:00pm-8:00pm). The SMFA and Tufts Commencement ceremonies will be held on Sunday, May 18.

Where should I park?
During the reception and ceremony, guest may either find street parking (free on Sundays), or park in the MFA's Huntington Lot, the Fenway Lot, or the Museum Road Garage, all of which have entrances on Museum Road, and have their ticket validated at SMFA (reception) or the MFA (ceremony) (
map).

What should I do if one of my guests attending the commencement ceremony has special needs?
