May 2010

Over a year ago I announced my plans for retirement and as the academic year comes to a close, I would like to thank all members of the SMFA community—past and present—for their contributions to the success and vitality of the School.

It has been a joy to be involved with the development of creative people and their work. Our students, faculty and staff have made my 32 years at the School endlessly interesting and meaningful. I have also deeply valued the wisdom and leadership of the School's Board of Governors, as well as the support of colleagues at the Museum and our partners at Tufts and Northeastern universities.

And last, but by no means least, I would like to thank everyone who has extended personal and professional generosity to generations of our artists. I am profoundly grateful and encourage you to continue to be involved and take pride in the School, its people and programs.

As the SMFA begins a new chapter in its history, I would like to welcome Chris Bratton as president of the School and deputy director of the MFA. Chris brings deep knowledge of the arts and rich experience in higher education from his work at the San Francisco Art Institute and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Please extend to him a warm welcome and your continuing support.
