Fed with a steady diet of superhero cartoons, science fiction movies and outer-space themed television shows, Lawrence Getubig grew up in the 70s and 80s daydreaming of these make-believe realms. At the age of five he wanted to be an astronaut like Buck Rogers. In high school he secretly imagined himself a cohort of He-Man. In college, he found an aptitude for Molecular Biology, and received his BS in 2001 from the Univesity of Oregon. Working for 3 years studying protein interactions and molecular cell signaling, he began to realize that perhaps research wasnt the most immediate way to find himself in the science fiction spaces he still fantasized about. Quitting his reseach assistant job, he decided to pursue his hobby of photography at the graduate level. Using photography and film, he is investigating whats more personally satisfying and meaningful to be creating visual fiction simulating his fantasy worlds, or contributing to science thru lab research. His art encompasses broader themes of gender and identity. A reconciliation of Lawrences science/fiction schism continues, as a current MFA candidate at the Museum School/Tufts University ('08).
