"Neither here nor there" references a sense of yearning for something that is both unknowable and unnamedencompassing the ache of wanting and the beauty of desiring. Laura Fischman's works in this exhibition hover between the physical and the psychological, that which can be represented and that which is invisible. It is in this space of trying to gain control and ground oneself, of hoping to understand, of being willing to want and desire, that she paints. The infinite and finite are two arcs of the same circle, impossible to separate and mutually dependent. Fischman's paintings honor the everyday and the overlooked, that which she has seen for years, yet never noticed; as well as the largeness of the infinitespace that is evocative and familiar, but also obscured, idealized and impossible to grasp.
