Howard Yezerski Gallery, 460 Harrison Ave, Boston, MA 02118
April 19–30, 2013
Reception April 19, 6–8 pm

White Terror is about loss, memory, image and a suppressed history. Growing up in Taiwan—a country filled with political tension both from within and because of its relation with China—Huaiyu Chou found the anxiety and sorrow of the country became part of her psyche. This series, White Terror, consists of an oil painting and approximately 20 miniature watercolor portraits, all based on photographs of victims of the great massacre of 1947 and the white terror period in Taiwan. The use of the miniature portraiture painting technique, together with the scale of the works, gives this piece a sense of intimacy.

Chou was born and raised in Taipei City, Taiwan. She received her MA in Philosophy in 2006 and moved to Boston to pursue her MFA in 2010.
