Congratulations to David M. Carroll (BFD '65) whose book Following the Water: A Hydromancer's Notebook (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, August 2009) has been named a National Book Award Finalist, Nonfiction.

Since 1950 the National Book Awards have recognized the best of American literature, raising the cultural appreciation of great writing in the country while advancing the careers of both established and emerging writers.

Following the Water
, which is a chro
nicle of Carroll's sojourn in the wetlands of New Hampshire, is one of five Nonfiction finalists. The 2009 winners in each category--Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry and Young People's Literature--will be announced at the 60th National Book Awards ceremony in New York on November 18. Each category winner will receive $10,000 and a bronze statue; each finalist will receive a bronze medal and $1,000.
