MFA Thesis Show "Get Down In The Pit"
Barbara and Steven Grossman Gallery, SMFA
June 1329, 2013
Reception: June 13, 68 pm
"Get Down In The Pit" is a blend of painting that leans toward sculpture and sculpture that leans toward painting; all exists in between that space. Lapossy's work covers some areas that can, at face value, be perceived as dark, yet the overarching themes are optimistic.
How do our constructed identities serve or fails us? Years of relating to the outside world through a television screen (or even just the screen on the back porch) has fostered a view of gender, nature, race and identity that leads us to play rolls and have misconceptions. Lapossy cracks open these illusions of normalcy as a means of destroying old models to get closer to each other, to create intimacy. The destruction she creates is not done without care or responsibility. In this destruction there is space for temporary transformation, humor and heroism that addresses the concern and reluctance to belong in our 'created' world.
