SMFA Traveling Fellows 2011 Announced
Over our long and distinguished history, the Museum School has been fortunate to be the beneficiary of bequests designed to support student work. None has been as important, or as enduring, as the Traveling Fellowships, which were created in 1894 to encourage post-graduate work and travel. While the selection criteria have changed through the years, the awards have consistently provided support to launch individual careers through independent work, travel and exhibition opportunities.
A jury comprised of Pieranna Cavalchini, curator of contemporary art at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and Francine Miller, art critic and writer, awarded eight fellowships selected from over 70 alumni applicants.
Matthew Gamber, MFA 2004
Cobi Moules, MFA 2010
Ridley Howard, MFA 1999
Jonathan Santos, MFA 2004
Sarah Malakoff, MFA 1997
Sandrine Schaefer, BFA 2004
Kristin Mortensen, BFA 2010
Sue Yang, MFA 2004
Two participants from this year's Fifth Year Certificate program were also awarded Traveling Fellowships by jurors Lynne E. Cooney, exhibitions director, School of the Visual Arts at Boston University and Michael Buhler-Rose, alumnus, artist and assistant professor at the Rhode Island School of Design:
Senem Kavak, Studio Diploma 2010
David Pappas, Studio Diploma 2010
The 10 recipients have approximately one year to complete their travels. At the conclusion of those travels, their works will be reviewed again and one artist from this distinguished group will be selected for a one-person exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to be held in the spring of 2013.
