MFA Thesis Performance by Cathy McLaurin

Tuesday, May 7, 2013
On May 7 at the Stanford Calderwood Pavilion @ the Boston Center for the Arts, Cathy McLaurin's performance No place like home will combine documentary, lecture and storytelling. The narrator weaves together images and sound through the story of the rural town of Siler City, North Carolina. Drawing from an archive of material compiled through off-site research and visits to the town, the narrator peels back a veneer of complexity to reveal undercurrents of power, desire and histories that intertwine with contemporary issues of race, immigration and industrial decline.

April MFA Thesis Exhibitions at Tufts University Art Gallery

By combining these moments in a painting, she enhances their abstract nature and obscures their reality; Kate Castelli's "End Page" is an intersection of books, works on paper and collections that explore poetic and formal juxtapositions in order to connect what cannot be connected; Stephen St. Francis Decky works with an ever-evolving cast of shape-shifting characters in a variety of media, from acrylic paintings and sculptural installations to the photographs and films through which their stories are brought to life.

Gillooly will introduce the film and participate in a Q+A afterward. A non-fiction work, "Suitcase of Love and Shame" is sourced from an audio diary discovered in a suitcase purchased on eBay. Part historical documentary and part experimental narrative, the film uses these reel-to-reel audio tapes to reconstruct a narrative of the adulterous affair between a Midwestern woman and her lover and to critically examine a moment in time in 1960s America. Gillooly has taught at SMFA for over 20 years; her previous films include "Today the Hawk Takes One Chick" (2008) and "Leona's Sister Gerri" (1995).

SMFA Mourns the Loss of Former Faculty Tim Nichols

Wednesday, December 8, 2010
It is with sadness that I inform you that Tim Nichols passed away on Friday November 26 at his home in Foster, Rhode Island; he was 78. Tim received a BA from Harvard University in 1954 and a law degree from Columbia University Law School in 1959. Tim, however, was not "fond" of being a lawyer and "announced that he was going to be an abstract painter," and with that graduated from the Museum School Diploma program in 1968, went to Skowhegan in 1971 and received an MFA from Indiana University in 1974. Tim taught painting and drawing at the School until his retirement in 2006.
