Carol Daynard (Dip '09) Wednesday, March 13, 2013 Daynard is participating in "Violence Transformed: 21 Days of Questions/365 Days of Action" at Cambridge College. In this series of events, the power of art to transform violence is illustrated by the work of community artists who address violence through their own lenses. Not only do they seek alternatives but focus on aspects of their individual response: protest, refuge, healing, commemoration and outrage. Garett Yahn (MFA '11) Tuesday, March 12, 2013 Yahn is exhibiting in "Old Work/New Work" at ACRE in Chicago. The exhibition explores issues of labor and value as viewed through the lens of family and the performance of manhood, and it was written about in Bad at Sports, a Chicago based contemporary art blog. Cindy Kleine (BFA '81, Dip '83, FY '84) Monday, March 11, 2013  The World Premiere of Kleine's film "Before and After Dinner: The Life and Work of André Gregory" will be at Film Forum in New York, where it will begin it's theatrical release with a two week run April 3–April 16, 2013. Tickets are on sale now through Film Forum. Kleine and Gregory will do Q and A's after the 7:50 screenings on the 3rd and 5th. Jesseca Ferguson (MFA '86, Faculty) Saturday, March 9, 2013 Ferguson is exhibiting in "The Doors of Perception: Vision and Innovation in Alternative Processes" at the PRC Gallery (Boston) February 5–March 23, 2013. Nicole Seisler (BFA '09) Tuesday, March 5, 2013 Seisler is exhibiting with Liene Bosquê as the collaborative artist team City Souvenirs. In "Constructing the Intangible" at ACRE Projects in Chicago March 3–17, 2013, the duo invites participants to make casts and impressions of their surroundings. The objects created serve as relics that hold the imprint of a site specifically chosen by each individual while also resonating with an experience familiar to most urban dwellers. Jia-Jen Lin (MFA '07) Saturday, March 2, 2013  Lin is exhibiting in the solo show "Mirror Therapy" at Treasure Hill Artist Village Attic Gallery in Taipei March 2–17, 2013. "Mirror Therapy" is a series of experimental works created during Lin's residency at Treasure Hill. Through sculptures, sound installation, video and performance collaborations, her work questions the contradictions and dependencies generated from the systems we create. Carol Sarkisian (AT '61–'62) Tuesday, February 26, 2013 Influential ceramist, jeweler and collector Carol Ann Sarkisian (b. December 22, 1936) passed away in Santa Fe after a long illness on January 12, 2013. As part of the Pasadena art scene of the 1960s, she and her husband Paul Sarkisian played important roles in the burgeoning contemporary scene in Los Angeles and started the Aura Gallery along with Richard Pettibone and George Herms. Yoshiko Yamamoto (Dip '72, FY '73, BFA '83) Friday, February 22, 2013  Yamamoto has work in a Lark Book publication set for release in July 2013. Her crocheted nylon monofilament necklace was selected for inclusion in Showcase 500 Art Necklaces. Charley Friedman (MFA '96) Tuesday, February 19, 2013  Friedman is exhibiting in "Contemporary Cartographies" at the Lehman College Art Gallery (NYC) February 5–May 11, 2013. Karin Rosenthal (AT '70-'72) Thursday, February 14, 2013  Rosenthal is exhibiting in "The Nude– Classical, Cultural, Contemporary" at Photo-Eye Gallery in Santa Fe February 15–April 20, 2013. Ellen Gallagher (Dip '92, FY '93) Thursday, February 14, 2013  Gallagher's work will be shown in "Don't Axe Me," opening this summer at the New Museum (New York). The show will be the first major US museum exhibition of Gallagher's work. The exhibition traces the transformations, excavations, and accumulations of Gallagher's practice through a number of her iconic paintings, drawings, prints, and film installations. A major new series of paintings will be presented alongside some of the artist's most celebrated works. Ed Rothfarb (BFA '72) Wednesday, February 13, 2013  Ed Rothfarb has a new publication: "Orchha and Beyond:Design at the Court of Raja Bir Singh Dev Bundela," published by the Marg Foundation, Mumbai, India, 2012. Matthew Paul Cleary (Dip '06, FY '07) Tuesday, February 12, 2013  Cleary recently joined the Das Baumhaus project in Berlin. Andrew Witkin (MAT '03) Thursday, February 14, 2013  On February 10, 2013 Witkin was joined by Amanda Katz of The Boston Globe's Ideas section in a discussion of why we love the idea of ideas. This discussion kicked-off the Conferences/Conversations/Convergences/Convivialities series at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. The series presents informal discussions with dynamic individuals in diverse fields all relating to the materials and processes of Andrew Witkin's PLATFORM 11 project. Cindy Kleine (BFA '81, Dip '83, FY '84) Friday, February 8, 2013 The U.S. Premiere of Kleine's film "Before and After Dinner: The Life and Work of André Gregory" will be on April 3, 2013 at Film Forum in New York, where it will begin it's theatrical release with a two week run before opening in other U.S. cities. Tickets are on sale now at filmforum.org for those shows. Kleine and Gregory will attend the Friday evening and Sunday evening shows and do Q and A's afterwards. The Canadian premiere of the film will be at The Festival International du Film sur l'Art in Montreal the week of March 14th, and there will be two "Sneak Preview" screenings in Washington D.C. on March 21+22, 2013 at the Networker Family Therapy Conference. The film is being distributed by The Cinema Guild, which is currently working on the poster design and trailer. She presents a unique, site-specific installation in UMMA's Zillman Gallery, incorporating both video and sculptural elements to create an immersive, sensory experience. Jowhara AlSaud (MFA '04) Friday, January 11, 2013  AlSaud currently has work included in the exhibition "Light from the Middle East: New Photography" at the Victoria & Albert Museum (London) through April 7, 2013. Work by artists from across the Middle East (spanning North Africa to Central Asia), living in the region and in diaspora, are presented to explore the ways in which these artists investigate the language and techniques of photography. The exhibition is divided into three sections, Recording, Reframing and Resisting, with AlSaud's work appearing in the latter. Nancy Simonds (Dip '77, FY '78) Wednesday, January 9, 2013  Simonds recently completed a new temporary public art installation commissioned by the City of Cambridge in 2011. Beacon of Color was commissioned by the City of Cambridge to improve this area at the corner of First and Spring Streets, which was damaged by a fire in 2008. Simonds designed Beacon of Color to add visual vibrancy and interest to this busy corner, using acrylic paint on durable board rather than her customary gouache on paper. Sophia Ainslie (MFA '01) Wednesday, January 9, 2013  Ainslie recently received an artist's grant from The Artist's Resource Trust, and she will be presenting work in a solo show at the Kingston Gallery January 30–February 24, 2013. The exhibition, entitled "in person," will feature new framed works and a mural scale drawing (10' x 30') created directly on the gallery wall. Norah Solorzano (Dip '06, FY '07) Tuesday, January 8, 2013 Solorzano was instrumental in the creation of "Animating Youth! John Wilson (Dip '47) Tuesday, November 13, 2012  Wilson's work is featured in "John Wilson: Eternal Presence," a retrospective of his drawings, paintings, prints and sculpture at the Danforth Museum of Art (Framingham, MA) November 18, 2012–March 24, 2013. Wilson studied under Karl Zerbe at the SMFA during the 1940's, and his career has spanned nearly seen decades. He was part of a group that later became known as Boston Expressionists, but Wilson's art cannot be viewed solely through an expressive lens. Andrea Parkins (BFA '88) Monday, February 8, 2010 Parkins (NYC-based sound/installation artist, composer and interactive electronics performer) was the subject of an article by David Stubbs in the August 2009 issue of The Wire. Also in 2009, Important Records released Andrea's most recent CD (broken orbit), a through-composed work for amplified objects, acccordion-driven feedback and processed instruments, based on Andrea's site-specific 10-channel installation commissioned by NYC's Diapason gallery for sound. She was also commissioned in 2009 to compose a live score and create sound design for "We Are Going to Miss Everything We Don't Need" by award-winning Portuguese choreographer Vera Mantero.
