Accepting Applications NOW!
Early decision and scholarship deadline is March 30, 2012.
We strongly encourage early application because of the program's limited space.
All applicants must submit the following:
- Application form (see below) and nonrefundable $50 application fee.
- One letter of recommendation from an art teacher or guidance counselor. Letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the Admissions Office. Applicants from outside the United States need to have a letter of recommendation in English.
- A typewritten essay (12 pages) on one of the following two topics:
- Why do you want to attend SMFA's Pre-College Summer Studio Program? Tell us what attracts you to this program in particular.
- Describe your ideal community. How might collaborating with other artists benefit your art (or not)?
- Portfolio: A minimum of eight images of your artwork, such as photographs or digital images. Acceptable digital formats include DVDs, CD-ROMs, or links to online portfolios. We do not accept submissions via email. Please label all materials with your name and title of work. Images should represent work done within the last year. Please do not send original works. Images will not be returned unless a self-addressed, stamped envelope is included.
International applicants must also submit additional information. Email
Katherine Mitchell for international application information.

The Next Step: After Application
After we have received your application we will notify you of your acceptance status and provide you with payment details on how to secure your spot in the program. Please make sure that you have submitted a current e-mail address, as it is our preferred method of communication with you after the initial application process. An Accepted Students Page will be available to you on this Web site to update you on forms that will need to be returned to us, and deadlines that you will need to attend to in preparation for your arrival. Please check this page often and carefully, as it is the primary method of communication about all details relating to your stay here at SMFA.
If the program is full and we cannot confirm your registration, we will notify you by telephone and place you on a waiting list. You will be notified if a space becomes available. This applies to housing as well. You will not be charged the deposit fee unless you are offered a space and agree to take it.
Please note that we encourage early registration.
