China Arts Immersion Program

July 21, 2013 – August 10, 2013
The Pre-College China Arts Immersion Program hosts students from China each summer to study fine art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA). This three-week residential interdisciplinary program offers access to the School's internationally known faculty and resources within the context of a rigorous curriculum in studio art. Rotating through courses in Painting/Drawing, Digital Photo and Design, and Sculpture, students build solid foundations and technical skills while developing their own concepts and visions. Regular visits to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, MIT List Visual Arts Center, the Institute for Contemporary Art, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum are integrated into the curriculum to give students a broader context of the abundant cultural attractions of Boston.

INSTRUCTION AND MENTORSHIP
Professional artists and teachers will instruct you in studio work and lead discussions about the artmaking process. Our unusually low student to faculty ratio ensures that you will get the attention you need as you develop your portfolio. This intimate atmosphere allows for one-on-one guidance and mentorship, allowing you to develop your own interests. In addition, you will be paired with a graduate mentor for individual consultations about your work.

PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT
You will leave with a strong portfolio of work. Your experience here will equip you with resources and advice on the college application process, career paths in the arts and how to best show your work in exhibitions. In the final week of the program, we offer the opportunity to meet individually with a member of our admissions staff.

THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, BOSTON
Students will have unlimited access to the MFA's permanent collections and special exhibitions, including drawing sessions and group discussions about traditional and contemporary art.

BOSTON- THE EXTENDED CLASSROOM
With its vibrant art and culture scene, Boston provides the perfect opportunity for artistic growth. Home to more than 60 colleges and universities and 56 museums, the greater Boston area is an ideal place to live, study and explore. Independent studio time, museum and gallery fieldtrips, and local neighborhood events provide enriching experiences outside of the classroom.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION
Students begin each day of the first week of the program with an hour of English lessons taught by trained ESL instructors. Mobile translators will also be available throughout the day to aid students as necessary. All classes are taught in English, giving students the chance to improve their listening and speaking skills while immersing themselves in arts programming.
