The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
(MFA), presents a screening of A Ripple
In The Water: Healing Through Art in recognition of World AIDS Day (December
1). The documentary, shot on location in South
Africa,
focuses on the inspiring work of grassroots artist and activist Kim Berman (MFA
'89). Berman developed a “Paper Prayers” campaign, using papermaking and
printmaking as a way to address HIV/AIDS awareness, poverty alleviation, and the
empowerment of women and children throughout
South
Africa.
The film, produced by Eileen M. Foti and Patricia Piroh, offers unique insight
into the true impact Berman's work has had on the lives of these
women. Following the MFA screening, a
reception and benefit sale will take place in the atrium of the School of the
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Featuring eco-friendly, handmade stationary, journals,
cards, and crafts made by the South African women featured in the film, the sale
benefits Phumani Paper, an organization that works with and supports 17
papermaking enterprises in seven South African provinces. To date, they have
created more than 250 jobs in mostly-rural communities
affected by unemployment and HIV/AIDS. Phumani
