Eligibility Requirements
Internships are available to students enrolled in the Diploma, BFA, BFA in Art Education, and Combined-Degree programs. Students enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate, Fifth Year, and MFA programs are eligible with program permission.

Studio Art Credit
To receive studio art (non-academic) credit for an internship, students register for an internship as a course through the Artist’s Resource Center (ARC 0033) upon approval by the ARC Internships Director. Students may register for 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, or 8.0 credits, depending on the number of contact hours to be fulfilled.

The credit-to-hour ratios below are calculated based on a 15-week semester; most academic year internships will commence within the first three weeks of the fall or spring semester.

Fall/Spring/Summer    2.0 credits = 120 hours (8 to 10 hours per week)
Fall/Spring/Summer    4.0 credits = 240 hours (16 to 20 hours per week)
Summer only             6.0 credits = 360 hours (24 to 30 hours per week)
Summer only             8.0 credits = 480 hours (32 to 40 hours per week)

Fall or spring internship credits are assigned via the student's Review Board at the end of the semester. Attendance at four (4) scheduled classes are required of all interns.

Internships may be completed over a maximum of four semesters (fall and/or spring). Up to two summer sessions may be substituted for fall or spring semesters.

Internships with the same sponsor are limited to two consecutive semesters, e.g. fall to spring, spring to fall, spring to summer, or summer to fall.

A maximum of 14.0 studio art credits may be earned through internships over a four-year period.

Credit-bearing internships occurring during the academic year must be completed in conjunction with a minimum of three additional studio blocks at SMFA. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 8.0 studio art credits (inclusive of internship and other studio courses) to be eligible for a Review B oard.

International students enrolling in an internship program must additionally meet with an international student advisor in the Student Affairs Office for approval.

How to Apply:
To begin, register to create an SMFA student account in artSource, the ARC's online professional opportunities database. Once your registration is complete, you will have access to current internship opportunities and an employer/organization directory.

Students wishing to take an internship for studio art credit will make an appointment with Catherine Tutter, ARC Internships Director, to discuss needs, goals, and questions.

Students will register on mySMFA for ARC 0033 (ARC Internships). A signature from the program director is required.

Evaluation Forms
Evaluation forms are completed towards the end of a student's internship and are an important document of the internship experience. Separate forms are completed by the intern and the sponsor, and must be submitted to the program director prior to the student's scheduled Review Board.

Summer Internships
Current students interested in summer internships may earn studio art credit toward a Diploma or degree. Begin by consulting with ARC staff, with whom one-on-one advising, resources, and review of intern proposals can be arranged. We recommend that you meet with us in February, March, or April for internships that will take place in June, July, and/or August. Registration is required through the Continuing Education Office when the approval process is complete. Click here for information about tuition, contact hour requirements, and rolling registration details.

A faculty advisor will be assigned to interns for the duration of each summer  internship. A formal end-of-internship report and evaluations will be completed. For further information contact Catherine Tutter at 617-369-3602 or ctutter@smfa.edu.
