As a volunteer at
the Museum School’s December Sale one year, Annette Born was helping
visitors buy artworks when a young woman came up to her and asked about a work
that had been hanging on the wall the day before.
“She said, ‘It’s
not there now; does that mean it’s sold?’” Born recalls. “I told her yes, and
she said, ‘Great—that’ll pay for my courses next year.’”
“That was a very
gratifying moment,” Born continues. “Here was a student who really needed the
money, who was able to sell a piece of art to help pay for her
education.”
As a member of
the SMFA’s Medici Group, Born appreciates the opportunity to interact
with student artists and even collect some of their work.
“For a recent
fund raiser called Proof of Purchase
at the RHYS Gallery, we asked artists to create a postcard-sized piece of
art,” she notes. “Then we hung the work, without the artists’ names visible, for
sale for $50 each. Five minutes after the event opened, the place was already
mobbed. By the end of the evening, there wasn’t much left—and we raised $15,000
for the School.”
Born adds, “The
art that comes out of the Museum School is exciting—it’s a whole different take
on things. These artists are seeing the world with a new eye.”
