Art
has always
played a key role in Demetra Taleghani’s life. “My passion
for art started when
I lived in Europe,”
says Taleghani, who worked as a journalist before taking time off to
raise two
children. “Now my husband and I do art as a hobby, and art
goes with us wherever
we go.”
So when Taleghani
saw an opportunity to get involved at the
Museum
School, she saw it as a
perfect fit.
“I had heard of the December Sale, but when I went
to Preview Night as a
volunteer, I was blown away,” she recalls. “It
was amazing to be in the middle
of all this art being created.”
Taleghani’s job
at the December Sale was to help sell the work of SMFA students and
alumni as
well as established artists. “It was an easy job—the art sold
itself,” she
recalls. “You walk around the sale and you see so much art
that you love. It’s
your time to buy artists before they’re
discovered.”
Inspired by her
experience with the December Sale, Taleghani found ways to get more
involved
with the Museum
School. Soon she was on the
steering
committee of the Medici Group, which raises funds and
generates interest
in the SMFA, by developing a close
relationship with the School and with the art community.
“In the Medici
Group, you have special access to students, faculty, alumni, and some
wonderful
events,” she points out. “Recently we did a private tour of
an art collection in
Beacon Hill. There were 25
or 30 of us, and we walked all
through the house, seeing art that
people normally don’t get to
see.”
Taleghani looks
forward to a long association with the School and with the Medici
Group. “I love
surrounding myself with promising artists, people who
are doing what they
love—who will go on to change the world of
contemporary art.”
