On May 7, 2007, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, honored renowned American artist Brice Marden at the 12th annual Medal Award ceremony and gala dinner, a fundraiser for student scholarships.

The Medal Award is given to an individual whose work furthers the development and understanding of contemporary art. Considered to be one of the finest artists of his generation, Marden first received critical acclaim in the 1960s and 1970s for his minimalist monochrome panel paintings. In the mid-1980s he began producing calligraphy-inspired paintings featuring sinuous ribbons of color, and in the past decade he has produced color-intense, linear abstractions. While his work has evolved over his more than 40 year career, it continues to be celebrated for its ability to bring together emotional intensity and formal simplicity.
