Dear SMFA Community:

We write to you today with some exciting news. The Museum of Fine Arts, Tufts University, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts have agreed formally to pursue the transition of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts to Tufts, creating a new division in the University’s School of Arts and Sciences with the proposed name of the SMFA at Tufts.

As you know, Tufts and the SMFA have had a long and rewarding partnership, providing students of both campuses the benefits of one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious colleges of art and one of the world’s premier institutions of higher education. Late last week, the trustees of both the MFA and Tufts University approved a Memorandum of Understanding outlining a process that, after further review and final approvals next spring, would make the SMFA part of the University as of June 30, 2016.

This historic step in our 70-year relationship is the result of a six-month effort that has involved the SMFA, Tufts, and the Museum. The new SMFA at Tufts would be a unique initiative, establishing a center for art and interdisciplinary research supported by a premier art school, premier university, and premier museum. The SMFA at Tufts would continue to offer existing degree programs, among them the BFA and MFA, and would endeavor to develop new academic opportunities. Further, it would create expanded arts and arts research opportunities for the Tufts community as a part of a deeper and long-term relationship with the Museum.

While many tasks lie ahead to detail the transition of the SMFA to Tufts University, we anticipate it will be a time of unmatched creativity as we work alongside a partner who is as committed to arts education as we are. In the end, we believe that the SMFA at Tufts will be a bold proposition that underscores the crucial importance of the arts. We will keep you posted as this transition takes shape and we look forward to your continued involvement. Thank you for your support, particularly of our current and future students, for whom this new chapter in the SMFA’s long and unique history will provide extraordinary opportunities in the arts.

Our best wishes for the holiday season,

Chris Bratton
President, SMFA
